Windows XP Retiring Next Year & What It Means For YouIt’s coming…the 8th of April 2014!

If  you’re not a bit (well, a lot really!) of a computer nerd, you probably won’t have any clue what apocalyptic event is occurring on this date!

Yes, Windows XP will be officially retired on this date. That old workhorse of a program that you’ve had for a decade now, will stop being supported by Microsoft.

So what does this mean for you?

This means that you will no longer receive updates, including security updates, for Windows XP from Microsoft, and if you have a problem with Win XP, you won’t be able to call Microsoft for support.

Support of Microsoft Office 2003 will also be ending on the same date.

What should you do?

There have been several incarnations of Windows software since XP and the two that you can possibly move to now would be Windows 7, or the very new Windows 8. This will depend on the specifications of your computer and you can find out more by chatting to your local computer tech, or visiting the Microsoft site to view possible upgrade scenarios.

If you are in business and running XP, it would be wise to start investigating your options soon, so that you aren’t caught out when support ends next year. Start planning your migration now!

Why is this so important?

The reason that it’s very important to move on from Windows XP, is that as mentioned above, the security updates for your version of Windows is going to STOP. Without these critical updates, your PC may become more vulnerable to malware, harmful viruses and adware. Even if you have an AntiVirus solution installed. This is because your Windows security updates often patch vulnerabilities within the system, essentially like an invisible band aid for your computer.

Without these ‘band aids’, the holes are there for all and sundry to enter.

There is also talk online, that with Windows XP essentially becoming more ‘vulnerable’ after this date, that hackers are getting ready to launch various attacks with zero day exploits on XP users.

So, my advice to you. Do some research on what new software will work best on your computer, as I mentioned, there will be upgrade options available which will be more cost effective than purchasing the software new.

Are you an XP user and are you mortified by this decision or ready for a change? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
